Freedom for Journalists on Lesbos is Under Threat

Berlin - The non-profit organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has urged the Greek government and authorities on Lesbos to provide journalists with unfettered access to refugees. In recent days, the RSF has received numerous reports of journalists being obstructed in their work by the Greek authorities on Lesbos, as revealed by Christian Mihr, executive director of RSF Germany, to "Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland". Some have been granted entry to the vicinity where thousands of former Moria residents currently reside, while others have been denied access, either without reason or on the grounds of an ongoing military operation or COVID-19 safety regulations, said Mihr.

Mihr expressed concern over the arbitrary and uneven treatment of journalists, causing hassle and making it difficult for them to independently document and contextualize the situation on Lesbos. This, he asserted, is crucial for the European public debate on the future of the people in Moria. Mihr referred to a judgment by the European Court of Human Rights from last year, which asserted that the question of how asylum seekers are housed and whether the state is meeting its international obligations towards them is a matter of great public importance and dispute [1]. The Greek authorities must, therefore, ensure that journalists can form their own opinions as freely as possible, and that "Moria does not become a black box," demanded the journalist representative.

Police on Lesbos occasionally bar journalists from entering a cordoned-off street area where refugees are living under subpar conditions, with insufficient access to water, food, and sanitation facilities. There have also been clashes between the police and refugees.
