Underwater Photography with Sea & Sea YS-D3 Strobe in the Sea of Cortez
Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning Strobes Shine in the Sea of Cortez
The Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning strobes have proven to be a standout choice for underwater photographers seeking power, versatility, and reliability. These strobes have recently demonstrated their capabilities in the unique underwater topography of the Sea of Cortez.
The YS-D3 strobes were put to the test in the Sea of Cortez, a body of water known for its clear water, abundant sunlight, and varied lighting conditions. With their wide angle beam, enhanced by the dome diffusers, the strobes handled the diverse qualities of water and light with ease.
Photographers on a recent Sea of Cortez photoworkshop, held aboard the Rocio Del Mar in July 2020, found the YS-D3 strobes to be particularly effective. The strobes were used extensively during the workshop, helping capture vibrant images of marine life, including sealions. The YS-D3's snoot accessory, specifically designed for the YS-D3, was instrumental in reducing backscatter when photographing these subjects.
The YS-D3 strobes offer a slightly cooler beam than their predecessor, the YS-D2J, which contributes to more natural and vibrant colour reproduction underwater. At higher powers, the quality of the beam was appreciated, with the strobes demonstrating impressive performance and reduced recycle times. In fact, at powers below 1/4, the YS-D3s had no recycle times at all when taking photos with low strobe power on dark walls.
The YS-D3 strobes are equipped with target lights that are brighter than those on the YS-D2J, providing better visibility in low-light conditions. They also boast a solid build quality, with a machined aluminum construction that ensures ruggedness and durability suitable for underwater use.
The YS-D3 strobes can be used as a primary dive light in certain situations, thanks to their high power and fast recycle time. They are also compatible with fiber optic cables for off-camera flash triggering, facilitating creative lighting setups underwater.
With adjustable power levels, the YS-D3 strobes offer precise control of light intensity to suit different shooting conditions and subjects. This flexibility, combined with their robust build and consistent performance, makes the YS-D3 strobes an excellent choice for capturing vibrant, well-lit underwater photos with ease.
The Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning strobes are now available at Bluewater Photo. If you're planning a trip to the Sea of Cortez, these strobes could be just what you need to elevate your underwater photography to the next level.
In addition, there will be Sea of Cortez Workshops in 2021 on July 2, July 24-31, and August 7-14, with prices starting at $2,845. These workshops offer a fantastic opportunity to learn from professional underwater photographers and improve your skills in a stunning marine environment.
