Underwater Artwork Contest Winners Announced
In the world of underwater photography, the annual "Safe Under the Sea" competition is creating a ripple effect. This year, photographers from 79 countries submitted their best work, showcasing the beauty and diversity of our oceans.
The competition, organised to bring people together and aid the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Foundation in their fight to improve the health of the planet and its people, saw a significant donation of 25% of the competition's proceeds towards the ongoing battle against Covid-19.
The winners were announced recently, and the top images were nothing short of stunning. In the "Famous Motorcycle of Thistlegorm" category, Taner Atilgan from Turkey took first place with a shot taken in the Red Sea, Egypt. Yannick Bruynoghe from Belgium won first place in the "Welcome to Tubbataha" category, capturing the essence of the Tubbataha Reef in the Philippines.
The "Beauty" category of the Compact Macro was won by Uwe Schmolke from Germany, who took a breathtaking shot in Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia. Meanwhile, Stan Chen from the USA secured first place in the "Lemon Goby" category with a shot taken in Lembeh, Indonesia.
The competition had various categories including Wide Angle, Macro, Marine Life Behavior, Portrait, Coldwater, Shipwrecks, Blackwater, Underwater Conservation, Underwater Art, and a Compact Category. The winners were asked to rank their prize choices and were awarded one prize based on totaling points from all their winning photos.
The "Releasing Hope" image by Edwar Herreno, which won the Best of Show, conveys hope for our future oceans. Herreno captured this poignant moment in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
The competition was made possible by generous sponsors including Bluewater Photo and Travel, Ikelite, Paralenz, AquaMarine Diving Bali and the Watergarden Hotel, Sealife, and Atlantis Dive Resorts.
For those aspiring to win in next year's Ocean Art competition, workshops are offered for participants. The full Ocean Art 2020 competition will be accepting entries in September, 2020.
Stay tuned for more updates on the "Safe Under the Sea" competition as it offers more prizes, more competition, and more great photos as they search for the top underwater photos of the year.
