Tesla Updates on March 25th: Temporary Production Pause for Model Y in China, Winter Range Improvements, Innovation in LFP Patent, Call for Boycott Against Musk

Tesla is ramping up its production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a move that could lower costs, secure supply chains, and strengthen the clean energy ecosystem, particularly in the US.

The company's Nevada factory, expected to start production in 2025, will focus on energy storage products like Megapack and Powerwall. Additionally, Tesla has secured a $4.3 billion deal with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution to produce US-made LFP batteries at their Michigan facility, with production targeted for 2027-2030.

The advantage of LFP batteries lies in their lower production costs and lighter environmental impact. They avoid using costly and environmentally problematic metals like cobalt and nickel, making them more economical for large-scale energy storage where energy density is less critical.

Producing LFP cells in the US reduces Tesla’s dependence on Chinese suppliers and helps meet U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) domestic content requirements, enabling Tesla to secure subsidies and incentives for grid storage projects.

LFP batteries’ stable thermal properties and long cycle life (3,000-6,000 cycles) make them ideal for energy storage that supports renewable integration and grid reliability, key to managing increasing electricity demand including from AI loads.

Tesla’s locally manufactured LFP batteries will enhance energy storage capacity, facilitate clean energy adoption, and support electrification goals aligned with federal policy and market demands in the US.

For Europe, although the Nevada factory and LG deal focus on the US market, Tesla’s expanded LFP capabilities globally create competitive pressure and could accelerate analogous developments in European battery manufacturing, potentially reducing reliance on Asian imports and boosting local energy storage solutions.

Drew Baglino, former Tesla CTO, recently commented on a new patent application for LFP technology. The patent describes a process that could enable cheaper LFP battery production.

In a tweet, Elon Musk expressed his intentions to export electric vehicles and stationary batteries to Europe with the message "Make Europe Great Again!". However, no concrete renovation plans have been announced from Germany yet.

Meanwhile, another energy supplier, badenova, announced a Tesla boycott due to Musk, while Lichtblick, an energy supplier in Germany, also announced it would no longer use Tesla’s electric cars.

In China, the Model 3 area in the factory will pause for one week, and deliveries for the Model Y are expected to begin in early March. Interestingly, the Model Y can already be ordered in a special launch edition in China and other Asian countries. The Model 3 achieved a high value of 702 kilometers in a winter range test, nearly matching its official WLTP rating with a deviation of only 24 percent.

In the political sphere, Trump's inauguration in the US could make it more difficult for Tesla’s electric vehicles, as his ally wants to abolish tax credits for buyers and introduce stricter CO2 regulations. Politicians from established parties in Germany reacted angrily to Musk’s support for the AfD.

In the midst of these developments, Tesla began producing the first new Model Ys in Germany on Tuesday. The company aims to use LFP batteries for two-thirds of its electric vehicles and stationary batteries in the long run.
