RTI International Wins $10M EPA Grant for Southeast Environmental Justice Center
RTI International has been selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to receive a $10 million grant, part of a $177 million package aimed at supporting underserved and overburdened communities. The grant will fund the newly established Region 4 Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center (EJ TC TAC), which will open on Monday, November 6, 2023, at North Carolina Central University.
The EJ TC TAC, led by RTI International, will provide assistance to community-based organizations in the Southeast. This initiative is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's Investing in America agenda. RTI has partnered with eight universities in the region to achieve this goal, including Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, and the University of Georgia. The opening event will take place at NCCU's Julius L. Chambers Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute Auditorium from 10:00 - 11:15 a.m. EST.
Speakers at the event include John Nicholson, Chief of Staff at EPA Region 4, Sherri White-Williamson from the Environmental Justice Community Action Network, Amy Roussel, Executive Vice President of Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences at RTI International, and Dr. Deekumar, Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Research and Sponsored Programs at NCCU. The specific speaker opening the event is not publicly specified.
The $10 million grant awarded to RTI International is part of a broader EPA initiative to support communities disproportionately affected by environmental issues. Through the EJ TC TAC, RTI and its partner universities aim to empower these communities by providing technical assistance and facilitating access to funding opportunities.
