Project 6633 Launches: First Global Dialogue on Arctic and Antarctic Security
An innovative international project, Project 6633, has launched to foster a comprehensive dialogue on security in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Led by the United States and Australia, this is the first global initiative to explore defence and security discussions across both polar circles.
Project 6633 aims to bridge the gap between polar academic groups and international military-policy sectors. It will convene an annual working group with multilateral stakeholders to produce a policy report on polar region security. Unlike existing forums that often compartmentalize the Arctic and Antarctic regions or focus solely on economic and societal challenges, Project 6633 seeks to explore similarities and differences between the two regions to debate political-strategic futures in the context of renewed great power competition.
Topics for discussion include Russia's and China's strategies in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The project welcomes commentary and analysis on security affairs in both regions, with a preference for pieces that integrate both regions. Dr. Elizabeth Buchanan and Dr. Ryan Burke serve as co-directors of Project 6633.
Project 6633, named after the latitude of the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, is set to provide a fresh perspective on polar region security. By encouraging dialogue that spans both regions, it hopes to shape a more comprehensive understanding of defence and security in the face of great power competition.
