Pirelli unveils real-time hazard detected 5G tyres for enhanced driving safety.

In a groundbreaking development, Pirelli's Cyber Tire technology is set to transform the way road infrastructure is managed, thanks to a multi-sensor, multi-connection system that collects and transmits comprehensive data on road conditions.

**Data Collection Mechanisms**

At the heart of the Cyber Tire system are robust sensors embedded in the inner part of the tire tread. These sensors, engineered to withstand extreme forces, continuously monitor critical metrics such as road surface roughness, asphalt irregularities, tire temperature, and pressure. In addition, vehicle-mounted cameras—developed by Univrses—analyse the condition of road surfaces and signage, complementing the sensor data with real-time images and video.

**Data Transmission and Connectivity**

The sensors communicate directly with the vehicle’s onboard systems using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This wireless protocol allows for low-power, efficient data exchange between the sensor-equipped tires and the vehicle’s telematics or control systems. Once processed onboard, the collected data—both from sensors and cameras—is transmitted to cloud-based systems using 5G connectivity. The high bandwidth and low latency of 5G ensure rapid, reliable transfer of large datasets, especially critical for applications that rely on real-time analytics and infrastructure management.

**Processing and Analysis**

The aggregated data is processed in the cloud, where advanced algorithms analyse it to provide actionable insights. Regional authorities access this information via digital dashboards, enabling them to monitor road health, prioritise maintenance, and enhance public safety.

**A New Era of Intelligent Infrastructure**

The Cyber Tire system promises to enable preventive, continuous, and data-based monitoring, reducing accidents caused by poor road conditions. Beyond road surface condition, tires collect data on tire model, tread depth, mileage, dynamic load, temperature, and acceleration. This advancement turns the tire into a node of the Internet of Things (IoT), in constant communication with its surroundings.

The system development has been driven by advancements in artificial intelligence applied to tires and vehicle software, as well as key alliances such as the one with Bosch to expand sensor capacity. Integrated into the car’s operating system, it can anticipate decisions that currently rely solely on cameras and radars. Cyber Tyre paves the way for more intelligent and environment-aware autonomous vehicles by feeding real-time terrain data to autonomous driving algorithms.

**Pioneering Pilot Program**

Italy and the region of Apulia, in collaboration with Pirelli, will launch the world’s first pilot of "cyber tires" with integrated sensors in July 2025. The Cyber Tyre technology will be deployed in a dedicated fleet managed by Ayvens, a European company specializing in car rental and fleet management. Pirelli has strengthened its presence in Apulia with the creation of a Digital Solutions Center in Bari, in collaboration with the University of Bari and the Polytechnic.

The wheel, traditionally a symbol of progress, is turning towards the future as a diagnostic, communication, and prediction tool. This advancement turns the humble tire into a beacon of smart city technology, demonstrating how future mobility will not just be electric, but also deeply connected.
