Persistent Emirati woman triumphs in landing a job via government initiative, discovering renewed optimism
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive employment for people with disabilities, often referred to as People of Determination (PoD), have shown remarkable success and a positive impact, particularly in the private sector.
One such example is Hawraa Al Ali, a 28-year-old Emirati with a physical disability and speech difficulties, who has found meaningful employment at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi. Hawraa, who has been using a wheelchair since childhood and was unable to enroll at university due to her condition, secured her job based on her coachability and willingness to improve her skills on the job.
Dusit Thani is an inclusive employer, actively registered with ImInclusive, a social enterprise that partners with the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an, and the Zayed Higher Organization to launch programs like Atmah. Atmah connects PoDs in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafrah with fair and equitable job opportunities with inclusive employers.
Hawraa Al Ali participated in Atmah and was connected to the hotel through the TAMM platform. She underwent a 12-week up-skilling programme before securing a position in the accounting department at Dusit Thani. The hotel supported Hawraa by offering flexible working hours and responsibilities that match her strengths.
Another success story comes from Al Ali, who enjoys her job, particularly the task of cross-checking bills, at Dusit Thani. Despite sometimes facing challenges with arranging figures, Al Ali has learned to correct her mistakes. Al Ali credits Atmah for helping her find employment and encourages others with disabilities to be active members of society.
The Chalhoub Group’s Jafza warehouse is another prominent example of inclusive employment. Over 20 PoDs, many of whom are deaf, are employed in meaningful and long-term roles such as labeling, sorting, and inventory support. This initiative, in partnership with the UAE-born platform ‘IAmInclusive’, exemplifies how structured and dignified employment can transform workplaces by fostering inclusion while setting regional benchmarks.
The success of these programs extends beyond individual stories. More than 100 Emiratis with disabilities have completed employability training through the second edition of Atmah since its relaunch in 2024. Moreover, more than 55 Emiratis with disabilities have landed jobs through Atmah.
These warehouse examples demonstrate concrete success stories of integration, empowerment, and economic participation for people with disabilities in the UAE. They align with the UAE's inclusive labor market goals, highlighting successful private sector integrations and ongoing efforts to expand opportunities for PoDs.
