Oswego County Plans to Spray Over 10,000 Acres Due to Detected EEE and West Nile Viruses
Aerial Mosquito Spraying in Oswego County, NY
Oswego County, NY, is conducting aerial mosquito spraying starting August 7, 2025, targeting approximately 10,000 acres in the towns of Hastings, West Monroe, and Constantia. This action is in response to the detection of both Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in local mosquito populations.
The spraying will cover the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area, bounded roughly by U.S. Route 11 to the west, NYS Route 49 to the north, the village of Constantia to the east, and the shoreline of Oneida Lake to the south, avoiding spraying over open water.
Residents in the spray zone are advised to take certain precautions. They should stay indoors from 6 to 10 p.m. during spraying, keep windows and doors closed, and cover or bring indoors outdoor items like furniture and toys. Additionally, residents are encouraged to cover fruit and vegetable gardens before the spraying.
The chemical used is Kontrol 30-30, containing permethrin, applied in a diluted form by a contracted company. Safety data sheets and pesticide labels are available on the Oswego County Health Department website or by phone.
The spraying is described as a temporary control measure, and the public is advised to continue personal mosquito exposure prevention methods. The precautions include using insect repellent and wearing long pants and socks when outside. Residents are also advised to keep pets indoors during the spraying.
The decision to spray comes after confirmation of four mosquito samples positive for EEEV—one in Central Square and three in West Monroe—and the first WNV positive sample in West Monroe. EEEV is a rare but serious disease causing brain inflammation and can be fatal. The New York State Department of Health declared EEEV an imminent public health threat in Oswego County.
If weather does not permit the spraying on Thursday, a rain date has been set for Friday. Notifications about spraying timing were sent via Oswego County’s Hyper-Reach Broadcast Notification Service. If there are any updates or changes, they will be posted on the county website.
For further protective guidance and updates, residents are encouraged to contact the Oswego County Health Department or consult the New York State Department of Health resources.
