In the heart of Japan, in the year 1886, Torakusu Yamaha found himself repairing medical equipment and clocks for a local hospital in Hamamatsu. Little did he know that this humble beginning would set the stage for a remarkable journey that would transform a musical instrument manufacturer into a global powerhouse in the motorcycle industry.

Born in Wakayama, approximately 80 km from Osaka, in 1851, Yamaha's interest in the new technologies he encountered during his repairs led him to leave home. He honed his skills in clock repair in Nagasaki and medical instrument repair in Osaka.

In 1887, Torakusu Yamaha founded Nippon Gakki Co Ltd, a company dedicated to producing musical instruments. A significant turning point came when he successfully repaired a harmonium in a local school, sparking his desire to produce musical instruments himself.

As Japan underwent liberal-economic reforms in the latter half of the 19th century, Western technologies and industrial businesses began to flood the country. This influx of new ideas and technologies provided the perfect catalyst for Yamaha's expansion.

Torakusu Yamaha passed away in 1916, but his successor, Gen'ichi Kawakami, kept the business unaffected, and Yamaha continued to expand its musical instrument production and overseas exports. Today, Yamaha Motor Company stands as a testament to Torakusu Yamaha's vision and the company's relentless pursuit of innovation and growth.

In 2022, Yamaha was ranked at number 28 on the international consulting group Interbrand's list of the 100 best Japanese brands, a testament to the company's enduring success and global influence.
