New Terminal Building to be inaugurated at Port Blair Airport by October 2022
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are set to witness a significant transformation with the development of a new terminal building at the Veer Savarkar International Airport. According to recent reports, more than 80% of the project work has already been completed.
The new terminal, slated for completion by October 2022, will bring about a host of benefits for the region. Enhanced educational and medical facilities are on the horizon, as the terminal will provide access to these essential services, improving the quality of life for the local community.
The development is also expected to create new employment opportunities, fostering economic growth in the region. The increased connectivity from the new terminal will open up new avenues for trade and commerce, contributing to the overall economic development of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The tourism industry is poised for expansion as well, with the operationalization of the new terminal building set to boost tourism in the region. The airport serves as a gateway to the pristine islands and the operational terminal will make it easier for tourists to visit and explore the beautiful archipelago.
The new terminal building will span three floors: lower ground, upper ground, and first floor. The upper ground floor will be utilised for passenger access during departure and arrival, while the first floor will serve as the security hold area for international passengers. The lower ground floor will be used as a remote arrival, bus lounge, and service area.
The terminal's design is inspired by nature, taking the shape of a shell, symbolising the sea and islands. The terminal will boast 28 check-in counters, three passenger boarding bridges, and four conveyor belts, ensuring a smooth and efficient passenger experience.
In addition, the terminal will have 100% natural lighting for 12 hours a day, achieved through skylights along the roof. This eco-friendly feature will not only create a bright and inviting atmosphere but also reduce energy consumption.
The city side area of the airport will be developed with adequate parking facilities for cars, taxis, and buses, ensuring smooth transportation for passengers. Furthermore, an additional apron area is being constructed, which will add four additional bays for aircraft parking.
The Airports Authority of India is undertaking the construction of the new terminal building at an estimated cost of around Rs 707.73 Crore. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on the integrated terminal building's construction timeline, it is recommended to consult official announcements from the Airports Authority of India or the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India.
