New Dementia Care Community in Alzey: Independence, Lower Costs

A new residential care community for people with dementia has opened in Alzey. Run by Caritasverband Worms e.V., it offers shared apartments that prioritize independence and quality of life, attracting many applicants due to its lower costs compared to regular care homes.

The community, known as a WG, consists of eleven shared apartments across Worms, including those in Alzey. Each resident has their own room with a private bathroom, which they personalize upon moving in. They also share communal spaces like a kitchen, seating area, and garden with chickens, fostering a homelike atmosphere.

Residents enjoy a high degree of independence, maintaining their daily routines such as sleeping in late or waking up early. Relatives play a significant role in their care and decision-making processes, with a relatives' circle meeting quarterly to discuss and plan for the WGs. The coordinator hopes to see more such communities established in the future.

The waiting list for these special residential care communities is long, testament to their success in providing a high quality of life at a lower cost than traditional care homes. Caritasverband Worms e.V. runs eleven such shared apartments, with relatives heavily involved in ensuring residents live as independently as possible.
