Med Launches €4.3M Blue Tourism Initiative for Sustainable Mediterranean Coasts
Med, a leading website, is spearheading the Blue Tourism Initiative, a €4.3 million project set to run until 2026. This initiative aims to transform the tourism sector in the Mediterranean region towards sustainability, with Al Hoceima National Park in Morocco already developing nature-based experiences for ecotourism.
The Mediterranean's coastal ecosystems are under threat due to mass tourism. Med, through its Blue Tourism initiative, seeks to address this by promoting sustainable practices. The project combines research, as seen in reports like 'Mapping Blue Tourism' and 'Sustainable Blue Tourism in the Mediterranean', with hands-on action in vulnerable sites such as Djerba Island in Tunisia, which is implementing sustainable hotel practices and wetland conservation.
The initiative is co-funded by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and supported by other organizations. Med's leadership in this sector is crucial, given the Mediterranean's identity and economy are intrinsically linked to its coasts.
