COVID-19 Travel Restrictions in Costa Rica (2022)

Good news for the globetrotters: Costa Rica is open to most travelers once again, including American tourists. However, you'll need proof of your COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test result before setting foot in this tropical paradise.

Many hotels, attractions, and private tours have reopened with new health and safety protocols in place, and you're still expected to follow certain guidelines as you explore.

Costa Rica's Stunning Highlights

Corcovado National Park

As Costa Rica's largest park and its most dazzling, the lowland tropical rainforests of Corcovado National Park are like the natural world on steroids. National Geographic deemed the Osa Peninsula "the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity."

Once exploring the park without a guide was possible, but since 2014, that's no longer the case. The stunningly beautiful, remote beaches, the forests teeming with life, and the rivers swirling with crocodiles, caimans, and even sharks are all part of this exciting adventure.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Monteverde, meaning "Green Mountain," is one of several cloud forests you can savor in Costa Rica. Misty, foggy, and near-permanently blanketed in cloud (hence the name), these unique forests are carpeted in moss and dripping with water.

You'll find the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in the northwest of Costa Rica, along the edge of the Tilaran mountain chain. Keep a keen eye out for a flash of the piercing blue-green plumage of the Quetzal, a bird once revered as a god by the Aztecs.

Volcanoes of Costa Rica

Costa Rica's mountainsides aren't just scenic; they're active! Due to its position along the Ring of Fire, the country is studded with hundreds of extinct volcanoes and a few that are still very much alive. The Central Volcanic Range is dominated by Poas, Barva, Irazu, and Turrialba.

Barva last erupted 8,000 years ago, Irazu in 1994, Turrialba in 2016, and Poas is currently closed to visitors since it exploded in April 2017. This whole landscape is a reminder that Mother Earth is still working her magic- slowly but surely.

Massive Crocodiles

Beware, that log's not a log! Crocodiles are a common sight along the banks of Costa Rica's coastal rivers, and croc attacks on humans do happen from time to time. One of the best (and safest) places to spot these prehistoric creatures is from a bridge over the Tarcoles River.

Resist the temptation to feed the crocs, as illegal crocodile feeding is often cited as the main reason for the beasts encroaching on human territory (or vice versa, depending on how you see it).

Beautiful Costa Rica Beaches

If you believe that a country's wealth is measured by the number of beaches, then Costa Rica is incredibly rich. All tropical cliches are here- glowing golden-white sand, swaying palm trees, warm azure waters, and plenty of surfing opportunities.

Some of my favorite Costa Rica beaches to photograph include Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side, the rugged Pacific shoreline of Corcovado, and the countless other beautiful beaches scattered across both coasts. The remote beaches along the Nicoya Peninsula were truly remarkable.

Colorful Costa Rican Flora

Costa Rica is home to more species of flowering plants and ferns than the entire United States, spread across its six types of forest: tropical rainforest, cloud forest, tropical dry forest, mangroves, riparian, and lowland rainforests, where Costa Rica's tallest trees can be found.

You'll want to bring a bigger notebook to jot down every new species of flora you encounter - trust me.

Adventure Activities

With stunning landscapes, Costa Rica is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From horseback riding and zip-lining to whitewater rafting, kayaking, and even rappelling down cliffs and waterfalls, Costa Rica offers a smorgasbord of adventure activities.

Planning ahead and seeking local advice is key. While it's essential to be prepared for all weather conditions, particularly during the winter months, be ready for unpredictable weather as well.

Costa Rican Rain Forests

These aren't the forests you'd find at home. The combination of extremely tall trees and constant rainfall or cloud cover results in a canopy that protects birds, animals, and plants that don't require much sunlight.

Worldwide, tropical rainforests contain over two-thirds of animal and plant species on the planet- and over 4% can be found in Costa Rica. Don't forget to take a guide with you- not just to avoid getting lost, but to better appreciate the marvelous sights you'll encounter.

A Birdwatcher's Paradise

From hummingbirds flitting from flower to flower to seventeen species of parrots and over 900 species of birds, Costa Rica is a haven for bird lovers. Many tours are available for both casual and serious birdwatchers looking to capture the diverse avian life of this biodiversity hotspot.

Your best bet is the Osa Peninsula, home of the Corcovado National Park, which contains over 350 bird species alone.

Rare Endangered Jungle Creatures

From the odd Baird's Tapir to the vibrant Strawberry Poison Dart Frog and the predatory Golden Orb Weaver, Costa Rica has a unique rulebook for fauna. Expect to see creatures that defy your imagination.

Bio-diverse Costa Rican Wildlife

Costa Rica's wild is teaming with life- over 500,000 species of creatures, formed by the land-bridge between North and South America, which offers a distinctive blend of animal and plant life.

Magical Costa Rican Waterfalls

From the breathtaking 300-foot towering cascades of Bajos del Toro to the unreal-looking turquoise pools at Rio Celeste Waterfall, Costa Rica's waterfalls provide the ideal backdrop for striking landscape shots. Some even have rope swings and jumping platforms for the more adventurous photographers.

Just make sure to ask locals or watch their technique to ensure the pools below are deep enough for jumping. Shallow pools and strong currents can be dangerous at some waterfalls.
