Ibiza Eradicates Illegal Airbnb Listings in Overtourism Fight

Ibiza, a popular Balearic Island, has successfully removed all illegal short-term rental listings from Airbnb, marking a significant step in its fight against overtourism. This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort between the island's governing body and Airbnb, with the help of data intelligence systems.

The initiative, part of Ibiza's strategy to strengthen its legal accommodation supply, began in March 2025 with an agreement between the Island Council and Airbnb. By September 2025, over 2,800 illegal listings were removed, totaling more than 14,500 beds taken down from the platform.

The success of this operation has led Balearic Islands president Marga Prohens to plan similar actions across other islands in the region. The use of data intelligence systems, such as those provided by Mabrian Technologies, played a crucial role in identifying and removing non-compliant properties, including campervans, tents, and cabins on unauthorised sites.

Ibiza's achievement sets a precedent for other destinations in Spain and beyond. While no specific actions by the Island Council or similar organisations in Spain have been reported in cooperation with Mabrian Technologies, the company's expertise in tourism analytics makes it a potential partner in future projects. The Balearic Islands continue to lead the way in tackling overtourism through innovative data-driven strategies.
