Historic Minneapolis Loft Transformed into Modern Luxury Residence
A historic Minneapolis loft, once the Standard Mill and later the celebrity-favored Whitney Hotel, has been transformed into a modern living space. The 5,000-square-foot seventh-floor unit, now a luxury residence, has been honored with design awards.
The loft's renovation involved Streeter Custom Builder, PKA Architecture, and Martin Patrick 3. They preserved historic elements while resolving structural challenges, honoring the West Side Milling District's legacy. The space, originally an innovative, light-filled mill, now features an open kitchen and dining/living area, with guest bedrooms and an office/den tucked beneath a steel mezzanine.
The design team added a solarium inspired by London's Crystal Palace, bringing nature into the top-floor loft. The client, an artist, was drawn to the space's brick walls and views of the Mississippi River, St. Anthony Falls, and the Stone Arch Bridge.
The loft, originally built in 1879 as the Standard Mill, has evolved through the years, from an industrial space to a luxury hotel, and now to a modern residence. Despite its transformations, it continues to celebrate Minneapolis's milling history and offer stunning views of the city's iconic landmarks.
