Berlin Family Man Goes Missing During Solo Hike on Corsica
In a distressing turn of events, Marc Lauriac, a 50-year-old Berlin resident, has disappeared without a trace while hiking on the Mediterranean island of Corsica since May 1.
Lauriac, an experienced hiker, started his solo adventure on a challenging trail through the mountains on the first day of his vacation. The area, renowned for its pristine nature, can also pose risks for less experienced climbers and hikers.
French authorities reported that Lauriac's mobile phone last signaled at 8:45 AM near the Pietrapiana mountain hut (Petra Piana, Haute-Corse) on the renowned GR20 hiking trail. Since then, no trace of him has been found.
The local mountain rescue team, along with gendarmerie, initiated search operations on May 4. The efforts were hampered by inclement weather, which restricted the use of helicopters and drones for surveillance and limited ground teams' effectiveness. The official search concluded on May 16 without any results.
Determined to continue the search, Lauriac’s family launched a private fundraising campaign on GoFundMe, aiming to raise 50,000 euros for additional coordinated search efforts. As of May 25, over 43,000 euros have been collected.
