Riding Vintage Trains Back in Time: A Journey to the Past this Summer
Summer in NYC ain't just about Central Park or smiling Statues. This year, jump aboard nostalgia-filled vintage train cars rolling out onto the tracks, courtesy of the New York Transit Museum! Give your city slicking self a break, beach-bound on trains dating back to the 1930s!
Two different Summer Nostalgia Rides will be offered: the Coney Island journey on July 19th and the Rockaways adventure on August 10th.
First, step back in time on July 19th as you board 1930s R1-9 vintage train cars for a two-hour trip to Coney Island. Once there, you're in for a good ol' time, whether it's taking Luna Park's rides, strolling along the boardwalk, or tucking into a classic hot dog from Nathan's! Whether you choose to stay or head back to the city after the ride, it's all up to you!
Alternatively, on August 10th, hop onto the Rockaways train, departing from the 96th Street-Second Avenue station, heading to Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street. Spend the day splashing in the waves, sunning on the sand, or enjoying the boardwalk's offerings. Remember to decide if you'd rather keep the party going late into the night or ride the train back to Manhattan.
These trains first hit the tracks in 1932 with the opening of the IND's Eighth Avenue line. Known for their combination of speed and massive passenger capacity, these trains stood out thanks to their notable innovation: four sets of double doors on each side for swift passenger loading and unloading. Each car is 60 feet long, with space for 60 passengers and the ability to carry up to 280 folks.
These trains' utilitarian green paint and riveted shell reflect the somber, industrial look of the Depression years. They even inspired the classic swing number "Take the A Train" by Billy Strayhorn!
Tickets are now on sale for both trips, priced at $60 for adults and $40 for kids. Member ticket prices are $50 for adults and $30 for kids. But remember, it might be smart to bring a portable fan to beat the heat since the train cars don't have air conditioning.
You can also make your way to Rockaway Beach this summer via the Rockaway Rocket and Rockaway Reserve!
