Europe's Enchanting Nation Boasts World's Purest Water for Aquatic Activities
In a recent report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), Cyprus has been crowned the European country with the cleanest waters for swimming. The Mediterranean island nation claimed the top spot, with an impressive 99.2% of its coastal waters achieving an excellent quality classification due to low bacteria concentrations.
One of the standout beaches contributing to Cyprus's success is Kourion Beach, located on the southwest side of the island. Known for its dramatic alabaster hills and mesmerizing blue waters, Kourion Beach is also home to ancient historical sights such as an amphitheatre and village ruins.
Ayia Thekla Beach, Makronissos Beach, Landa Beach, Konnos Bay, Green Bay, Kalymnos Beach, Governor's Beach, Aphrodite Beach, and Protaras Beach (Fig Tree Bay Beach) are some of the other best beaches in Cyprus. Ayia Thekla Beach, Makronissos Beach, Landa Beach, and Protaras Beach (Fig Tree Bay Beach) are situated on the southeast side of the island, while Konnos Bay, Green Bay, and Kalymnos Beach are located on the southeastern coast.
The cleanliness of Cyprus's swimming waters can be attributed to several factors. Strict environmental regulations and beach management practices, such as maintaining beaches under the Blue Flag program, ensure consistently clean water and well-maintained sand areas. Furthermore, the country benefits from effective control of land-based pollution, good water quality standards, and coastal natural filters like wetlands and coastal zones that help stabilize salinity and reduce pollution impacts.
Investment in sanitation systems and infrastructure also plays a significant role in limiting sewage and hazardous waste input into the sea. The EEA's report analysed over 22,000 bathing waters across Europe, with Cyprus earning first place. Five countries with outstanding water conditions were identified: Croatia, Austria, Greece, Bulgaria, and Cyprus. Remarkably, no Cypriot bathing water was classified as poor quality, and a total of 123 reported bathing waters in Cyprus ranked as excellent quality, with only one exception.
Albania, however, fared poorly in the report, with only 16% of reported locations ranking as excellent. Nearly half of Albania's waters achieved good quality, while over a third earned merely sufficient or poor quality.
