Essential Facts about Munich's Oktoberfest Celebration

The 190th edition of Munich's world-renowned Oktoberfest is underway, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you make the most of your Oktoberfest experience.

Reserving a Table

Calling to reserve a table at the beginning of September is likely to be unsuccessful, as most tables in the tents are already booked for evenings and weekends since spring.

The Tents

There are 14 large tents on the Oktoberfest, each offering a different atmosphere. From the traditional tranquility in the Augustiner tent to the wild party atmosphere in the Schottenhamel or Paulaner tents, there's a tent to suit every mood.

The Beers

Six Munich beers are served at the Oktoberfest: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten. The taste of the Oktoberfest beer is a matter of personal preference and faith, as shown in the annual blind tasting before the start of the festival.

Safety Measures

The festival organizers rely on proven safety measures, including a fence around the Wiesn, entry checks, and the support of the Bavarian riot police, specialized pickpocket hunters, and international deployment forces. Climbing onto a table in the tent and downing a liter is prohibited and will result in expulsion. Smoking is banned on the Oktoberfest due to Bavarian law.

Security

Some tents support the "SafeNow" app, which can be used to call security personnel with a single click. The Federal Police has issued a decree prohibiting the carrying of dangerous tools, firearms, irritant weapons, cutting and stabbing weapons, and all kinds of knives during the Oktoberfest period, including in the areas around the Wiesn.

The Best Tents

The Hofbräu-Festzelt, popular for its lively international party vibe with a standing area near the music stage, and the Schottenhamel tent, the oldest and where the official opening ceremony happens, known for its traditional and youthful atmosphere, are the best tents for the festive atmosphere at Oktoberfest.

Avoid the Kotzhügel

The small hill behind the tents on the west side of the Theresienwiese, known as 'Kotzhügel' by Munich residents, should be avoided. It's not advisable to spend thousands of euros on second-hand table reservations either.

Cost of Beer

The cost of a liter of beer on the Oktoberfest this year is between 14.50 and 15.80 euros, an average increase of 3.52% from 2024.

Police Presence

The 'Wiesnwache' of the Munich police is supported by these forces, and police officers from Italy are traditionally deployed during the 'Italian weekend.'

The Käfer Tent and Hofbräu

The Käfer tent offers a luxury version, while the Hofbräu tent is known for its international party crowd.

In 2023, a record 7.2 million people attended the Oktoberfest, although the official count is around six million visitors. With these tips in mind, we hope you have a fantastic time at Munich's Oktoberfest 2025!
