Vietnam Airlines' Short-Haul Economy Class on Airbus A321 Offers Comfortable Travel Experience

In this review, we examine the economy class experience onboard a Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321 during a short-haul flight from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City.

The Aircraft

Our flight, VN-A397, was a 12-year-old Airbus A321-200, part of Vietnam Airlines' fleet of 62 A321s, comprising both A321CEOs and A321NEOs primarily used for domestic routes. VN-A397 was configured with 16 Business Class seats and 168 Economy seats in a 3-3 arrangement.

Route

The route between Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City is a popular seasonal connection for tourists pursuing cultural experiences. With four carriers offering 68 weekly flights, Vietnam Airlines provides the majority of these services using narrow-body aircraft, reflecting consistent demand.

Seating Arrangement and Amenities

Each economy seat features a standard design, offering comfortable fabric cushioning, an 81 cm (32 inch) seat pitch, and a backrest recline of 11.5 cm. While the armrests are firm and structured, they offer a sense of space, contributing to a surprisingly wide seating experience. Tray tables are adjustable and foldable, situated within the armrests.

In-Flight Service

Vietnam Airlines' service exemplified hospitality, with each crew member exhibiting a courteous and warm demeanor throughout the journey. The meal service included a choice of dishes, with the chicken dish served on this flight proving tender, flavorful, and satisfying. The meal tray came with a bread roll, butter, banana, and a beverage selection.

Entertainment and Connectivity

Although personal in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens were not available, passengers could utilize mobile-based entertainment by connecting to the onboard LotuStar WiFi, which provides access to the same IFE system found on wide-body Vietnam Airlines aircraft. The seat-back pockets were stocked with various items, including a "Heritage Guide" to Ho Chi Minh City, a useful resource for travelers.

Other Amenities

Blankets were provided for all passengers, while pillows were not. The lavatories were well-maintained, featuring basic amenities like hand soap and towels. Wet towels were distributed before takeoff.

Value for Money

Vietnam Airlines strikes a balance between affordability and quality, offering a more comprehensive experience compared to low-cost carriers while providing a service that is comparatively better than many budget airlines. The true value lies in the type of aircraft used, as wide-body aircraft typically offer a more extensive onboard experience.

In Summary

Vietnam Airlines' economy class on the Airbus A321 offers a comfortable, functional, and value-for-money travel experience, focusing on passenger comfort while maintaining a competitive edge. This short-haul flight was a delightful testament to the airline's commitment to delivering quality service without breaking the bank.
