Cuba Relying Heavily on Chinese Tourists Amid Bleak Economic Scenario

HAVANA - Cuba is counting on a surge of visitors from communist ally China to prop up its ailing tourism industry, hammered by renewed US sanctions and a troubled economy. With a 33% drop in international arrivals in Q1 2025, Cuban officials are looking for alternatives to the traditional tourist hotspots.

In an April 30 speech, Minister of Tourism Juan Carlos Garcia highlighted China as a key partner, praising the close ties that have "stood the test of time." The Chinese, who can travel to the island without needing a visa, are increasingly choosing Cuba as their travel destination, and this trend is expected to continue.

In 2024, there was a considerable surge in Chinese tourists, jumping 50% from the previous year. The growth can be attributed to Air China's introduction of direct flights between the two nations, a 24-hour journey, but one that has boosted visitor numbers.

However, other traditional sources like Russia, Canada, Spain, and Italy have seen tourist numbers dwindle in early 2025. US visitors also took a hit, with a significant drop in Q1. Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero called for an end to the US travel restrictions during his presentation.

Once an allure for tourists captivated by the charm of a communist-run island seemingly stuck in the '50s, Cuba is seeking to diversify its tourism offerings to attract more foreign investment and partnerships, as well as implement economic reforms to revive its tourism appeal.
