Breaking News: Measles Outbreak Continues Across Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed a sixth case of measles in a local resident, adding to the ongoing outbreak that has affected several states in the US.

The latest case is believed to have traveled through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while infectious. Public Health is now working to identify others who may have been potentially exposed to the measles.

This outbreak, primarily centered in West Texas, has seen over 1,300 cases reported across at least 39 states as of late July 2025. Texas alone has over 760 confirmed cases, with New Mexico reporting around 66 cases and Oklahoma cases included in broader regional counts linked to outbreaks in these states.

In response to this growing crisis, Public Health urges residents, especially those who travel internationally, to get measles immunization. The CDC strongly recommends that all travelers to areas with active measles outbreaks, especially Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, be fully vaccinated with the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine before travel.

The MMR vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective against measles. Infants 6 to 11 months old should get one dose of MMR vaccine before travel. Children 12 months and older should have two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days. Adults without evidence of immunity (either vaccination records or prior measles infection) should also receive at least one dose, preferably two doses of MMR vaccine.

Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer, stated that measles is a serious respiratory disease that spreads easily through the air and on surfaces. Exposed individuals who have been free of symptoms for more than 21 days are no longer at risk.

The investigation into this latest case is a collaboration with the California Department of Public Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services. As of April 24, a total of 884 measles cases have been reported in the United States this year.

The traveler was not infectious during the time of travel, and the case occurred in a Los Angeles County resident. Public Health is looking to identify others who may have been exposed to this person.

| State | Approximate Current Cases (2025) | |------------|---------------------------------| | Texas | 760+ | | New Mexico | 66 | | Oklahoma | Included in regional outbreaks |

| Vaccination Recommendations for Travelers to Outbreak Areas | |-------------------------------------------------------------| | Infants 6-11 months: 1 dose MMR before travel | | Children 12 months+: 2 doses MMR (at least 28 days apart) | | Adults: At least 1 dose MMR if no evidence of immunity |
