Capturing Muskox Images in Winter's Dovrefjell Landscape
** Winter Wonderland Adventure: Photographing Majestic Muskoxen in Norway's Dovrefjell National Park **
Ever dreamt of trekking through a frozen Arctic landscape in search of majestic muskoxen? In this spirited tale, we join our intrepid photographer as they embark on their quest to capture the magic of these enigmatic creatures living in Norway's Dovrefjell National Park. Buckle up, my friends, for an adventurous ride!
What Are Muskoxen?
First off, let's learn a smidgen about our subject; the muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is a resilient beast native to the chilly climes of the Arctic. Known for its luscious coat, this mammal stands as a relic of the distant glacial era. After a successful reintroduction some 80 years ago, a minuscule group lives in Dovrefjell, shielded from numerous perils - mostly linked to global warming.
Warming winters cause melted, refrozen snow to wreak havoc on the muskoxen's foraging, and their meager resistance to infectious diseases from livestock and wild reindeer, as they all hail from Greenland. So, our photographer takes care to stick close to the humane ethos that upholds the muskoxen's wellbeing above all photo opps.
My Frostbite-Defying Adventure
Each winter visit to Dovrefjell brings new challenges and thrills. Our story's protagonist has braved this icy paradise twice - first in 2016 and again in 2022. For this icy sojourn, they brought along their trusty companion, Marco, an old friend from the Italian Alps.
Adversity struck as soon as their initially scheduled guide fell ill, leaving our daring duo to draw upon their mountainous instincts and historical GPS data. Armed with unwavering resolve, they delved into the treacherous winter wilderness to find their woolly quarry.
Following a grueling search, the trail led to a troop of muskoxen hidden amongst the snowy expanse. The triumph of discovery was tempered by the ominous sky, however, as heavy snowfall and gusting winds mounted. With fatigue settling in and the prospect of a challenging retreat on the horizon, the photographer and Marco captured their prized photographs before retreating to safety.
The following day, our heroes rested and strategized to reach the animals without the aid of their wayward guide. Maps were consulted, and conversations with a ranger paved the way for a plan of action on Day 3.
With clear skies and a renewed sense of determination, they set off once more. After scant minutes, they encountered three Norwegian adventurers - a guide and two clients, gearing up for a two-night camping excursion. Sharing smiles and simple words of encouragement, the encounter was brief but heartwarming.
Not long afterward, they crossed paths with a solitary Norwegian skier descending the hill alone. His stark warning about the incoming snowstorm prompted immediate concern, as their own weather forecast hadn't shown any such impending storm. Intent on proceeding, they persevered – climbing a ridge to visit the muskoxen from a bird's-eye perspective.
Upon reaching their quarry, they noticed the animals had moved to a more sheltered spot to weather the storm. The storm, unfortunately, continued to worsen, and it was time to return to safety. The guide offered them a choice: either take refuge in the tent or push onward knowing their route. With consummate confidence in their ability to weather this tempest, our heroes opted for the uncertain path back to warmth and sanity.
The return journey was grueling. The unrelenting wind and snow represented an implacable foe that dropped the temperature down to sub-zero levels. Two GPSs and years of mountain experience proved invaluable as they navigated back to the warmth of their car. The road home remained closed, but they managed to find an open route to a nearby village. Thus ended an exhausting, yet successful expedition.
Strong winds greeted them on Day Four, albeit without new snowfall. The specter of their friends still worried them, but faith was rewarded – they found their three Norwegian comrades near where they had last bid farewell, in the company of the coveted muskoxen.
