In the heart of Berlin, a rare case of bat rabies has been detected, serving as a timely reminder for residents and visitors to exercise caution when encountering wildlife, particularly bats. The discovery was announced by the Senate Administration for Consumer Protection.

Between July 2020 and July 2025, three cases of rabies virus infections in bats were identified in the city. However, the true prevalence in the bat population and the affected species remain uncertain. European bat lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1) was the specific strain detected in a bat found in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

The Senate Administration advises against touching injured or sick bats found during the day with bare hands. Instead, gardening gloves or a towel are recommended for handling such animals. Bats can be defensive and may not want to be touched, making protective gear essential.

Any contact with bats, even minor ones, carries the risk of transmission through infected saliva. If there is any doubt about skin contact with a bat's teeth or claws, or if a child has been unsupervised with a bat, seeking medical advice as soon as possible is recommended.

Infections in humans are very rare, but they can be potentially life-threatening if left untreated. Public health authorities recommend immediate medical attention for anyone bitten or scratched by a bat. In case of suspected exposure, post-exposure prophylaxis (vaccination) can prevent rabies in humans.

The brochure from the Senate Administration also emphasises the importance of not handling injured or sick bats without proper protection to prevent possible exposure to the rabies virus. It is advisable to avoid any contact with bats, especially with bare hands.

In the event that a bat is found, a call to bat experts can be helpful before picking it up. Professional wildlife rehabilitators or animal control services are better equipped to handle such situations safely.

It is crucial to remember that bat rabies should not be confused with fox rabies. Bat rabies is notifiable, meaning it needs to be reported to the authorities.

While the risk of encountering rabies-infected bats in Berlin is low, it is essential to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when interacting with these creatures. After all, their cute appearance can be deceptive, as they can pose a risk due to the potential for rabies infection. Always prioritise safety and seek professional help when necessary.
