In the heart of the malaria-free Lapalala Game Reserve, nestled on a 100ft rock face overlooking the Palala River, lies Noka Camp – a unique eco-friendly retreat that has recently been shortlisted in the 2020 AHEAD Awards in the Lodges, Cabins & Tented Camps category.

The project, a brainchild of architect Peter Rich, aligns perfectly with his commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly design. The owner of the project was inspired by Yuji Yamazaki's previous projects, all operated by solar power, and sought to pursue a similar concept.

Noka Camp, designed by Yuji Yamazaki from Yuji Yamazaki Architecture, sleeps 12 and offers an exquisite base for exploring the 50,000 hectares of the Lapalala Wilderness. The buildings are built on steel stilts to minimise disturbance to the land, and the guest accommodations boast panoramic views.

Some standout features and design highlights, as mentioned by Yuji Yamazaki, include its sustainable and eco-friendly design. The original brief for the project was to create guest accommodations that are sustainable, using renewable energy, and have minimum impact on the existing nature.

The main challenge in building Noka Camp was constructing guestrooms on the edge of a cliff, which required a comprehensive geo-technical survey. Despite this, all feedback received about Noka Camp has been positive.

The profit from Noka Camp contributes to the betterment of local communities and the conservation of the game reserve. The camp's recognition in the AHEAD Awards is an honor, reflecting the commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of the Lapalala Wilderness.

Lepogo Lodges, which consist of two separate lodges – Noka Camp and the upcoming Melote House – strive to provide a unique and memorable experience for their guests while minimising their environmental footprint. Melote House, an exclusive use house sleeping up to 16, is set to open in 2021.
