Celebrating the Centenarian: Marianne Berndsen's Remarkable Life

Marianne Berndsen, a resident of Wiesbaden, is a woman of many talents and passions. Born in a city steeped in history, Berndsen has left an indelible mark on the local community, not only as a publishing buyer at the Rhineish Publishing Society but also as an adventurous mountaineer and a cultural enthusiast.

As the city of Wiesbaden celebrates the 100th birthday of its Rheingau quarter, Berndsen, a centenarian herself, has become an integral part of the celebration. But her ties to the city go beyond her age—she is a 100-year-old mountaineer, having climbed over 150 peaks over 3000 meters high.

Berndsen's love for the mountains is matched only by her affection for the Rheingau wine festival. However, her interests extend far beyond the peaks and vineyards. Berndsen is an avid traveler, her curiosity for foreign cultures fueling countless journeys across the globe.

Her travels have resulted in an impressive collection of thousands of slides, each a testament to her adventures. Her passion for photography has allowed her to document her experiences, creating a visual narrative of her extraordinary life.

Berndsen's connection to Wiesbaden's cultural scene is further evident in the city's museums. Museum Wiesbaden is currently presenting a double retrospective of Alexej von Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin, an exhibition that honours the shared life journey of these two influential artists. The exhibitions, initially planned to run until mid-July, have been extended due to the solidarity of museums and the art scene during the corona crisis.

In addition to her mountaineering and cultural pursuits, Berndsen has been a member of the German Alpine Club since 1948. Her dedication to the club has seen her conquer three four-thousanders, and she has even climbed the Grossglockner without taking water, instead relying on snow for sustenance.

This Easter, Berndsen's generosity extended beyond the mountains. Along with Wiesbaden's Mayor and numerous helpers, she distributed green sauce, potatoes, and eggs for the Easter meal, ensuring that homeless people in the city had a special meal on Good Friday.

Berndsen's life is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and community spirit. As she continues to inspire those around her, her story serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences that make up the fabric of our cities and communities.

Marianne Berndsen's adventures extend beyond the peaks of mountain ranges, as she is an avid traveler, exploring foreign cultures and capturing her journeys with thousands of photographs (lifestyle, travel). Her love for Wiesbaden isn't limited to the Rheingau quarter or the vineyards; she is also a dedicated member of the German Alpine Club, having climbed three four-thousanders and conquered the Grossglockner without water (home-and-garden, lifestyle).
