Drowning Incident: 18 people lost their lives on MV, surpassing the annual death toll from 2024, according to DLRG reports.

Drowning incidents on MV have surpassed the 2024 total, with 18 fatalities reported by the DLRG. - 18 individuals lost their lives in a maritime tragedy; this surpasses the recorded drownings in the year 2024, as per DLRG reports.

In a statement made at the Lübeck-Travemünde seaside resort, Ute Vogt, the president of the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) federal association, shared some concerning statistics regarding water-related incidents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and across Germany during the summer season.

During the summer season of 2025, around 5,500 DLRG volunteers were on duty at approximately 100 guarded beaches on the North and Baltic Seas. However, the number of volunteers on duty in July was significantly lower than the previous year, with only four individuals on duty compared to eight in July 2024.

Unfortunately, this decrease in volunteer presence did not result in a decrease in water-related incidents. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern alone, 18 people drowned in the first seven months of 2025. This is a slight increase from the same period in 2024, where 15 people lost their lives in water-related accidents.

The majority of these incidents occurred in the Baltic Sea. Ten people drowned in the Baltic Sea in 2025, with nine of the ten cases occurring in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Three people drowned in harbors, one person drowned in a stream, and one person drowned in a pond in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In addition to these incidents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, nationwide, 236 people drowned in the same period, which is 16 fewer than in 2024. It's worth noting that in inland waters, 87 people drowned, 10 more than in the same period last year.

Interestingly, the majority of the victims in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were older individuals. 13 of the 18 victims were over the age of 51. This underscores the importance of water safety for all ages, especially for older individuals.

The DLRG emphasizes the importance of swimming at guarded beaches, as these areas offer the highest level of safety. Despite the decrease in volunteer presence in July 2025, DLRG maintains that swimming at guarded beaches remains the safest option for water-based activities.

These statistics serve as a reminder of the risks associated with water-based activities during the summer season. It's crucial for everyone to prioritize safety and follow water safety guidelines to reduce the risk of accidents.
